How we got the Internet

This article is the first article in the Emerging Web series which chronicles the rapid evolution of the world wide web in the past, present, and future. Accompanying this series is the New Web Glossary. Words (to be) defined in the glossary are placed in italics on their first appearance. After each post new entries are added.

The focus of this series is on the world wide web.

The Emerging Web series

The web is evolving rapidly, it's hard to keep track. This series will try to shine some light on where it all came from, where it's at, and where it's all heading. We will start with a little bit of history, explain some of the stuff that is relevant in todays world wide web, and end the series with some foresights into the foreseeable future.

Accompanying this series is the New Web Glossary.

Friedman numbers

For all who should be studying, working or doing household chores I present some numerical trivia to waste your time lighten your day. Some professor named Erich Friedman came up with the idea of searching for numbers that are equal to a calculation containing the exact same digits that occur in the number. Sounds hard? Not at all. Here are some examples :

  • 126 = 6 × 21
  • 347 = 73+ 4

Are you starting to get the idea?

Multilingual blogging

I've been looking into wordpress plugins to write posts in multiple languages. Until now I've sticked with English for a number of reasons. First of all it's more or less the lingua franca of the internet, second of all most Flemish people have no difficulties with English, so it only broadens the audience. Nevertheless I'd like to blog in Dutch from time to time, and have the option to translate a post so it's available in both languages. As Molly E.

Learning Chinese, the 21st century way

There are a lot of great websites and [tag]free software[/tag] apps to assist in studying the [tag]Chinese[/tag] [tag]language[/tag]. Just today on Chinese-Forums I discovered ZDT, and I'm already hooked. I had been thinking about starting an open source flashcard application in PHP, but now there's really no need for that any more.

My favorite Firefox plugins

These are my six most favorite plugins for the Firefox web browser, in order of preference.

  1. Sessionsaver A friend of mine is a big fan of the Opera web browser. One of the features he appreciates most is that when you start it, you immediatly return to the pages you were visiting the last time you closed it. After he told me this I went looking for a firefox plugin, and lo and behold, there you have it. This one is so nice I hardly think about it any more.
